EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN THROUGH COMPOSTING

SEEDS Trust, with the help of experts, trained and constructed compost units (vermi-composting) for 60 poor women. All units were functioning well and that the enriched compost was being sold to local farmers. SEEDS Trust was of the view that to increase compost output, beneficiaries needed to be provided with milk cow, meat goat, poultry chicks and seeds to grow fodder trees in their kitchen yards.

The compost harvesting plots were well kept and the women who owned them were proud of their accomplishments. Bio-waste can only be collected three months of the year due to the water shortage during the other nine months, which reduces the plant life the worms need to feed on. To sustain composting the year round, the women need livestock.
